Social-Emotional Curriculum

The Formative Five

At Laurel Hall, character education is a vital part of our mission to nurture the whole child. Across Kindergarten through 8th grade, we intentionally integrate the principles of the Formative Five Empathy, Self-Control, Integrity, Embracing Diversity, and Grit — into daily learning experiences.

These five essential character traits help students develop a strong moral compass, make responsible decisions, and build meaningful connections with others. Through classroom discussions, real-world applications, and community-focused projects, students learn to understand different perspectives, persevere through challenges, and act with honesty and compassion.

By weaving the Formative Five into our school culture, we prepare students not only for academic success but also to lead with character and purpose. Our graduates leave Laurel Hall equipped with the social and emotional foundation they need to thrive in high school and beyond — as thoughtful, resilient, and empathetic members of their communities.

Buddy Program

Our Buddy Program pairs older students with younger ones — creating special partnerships that foster mentorship, friendship, and a sense of belonging across grade levels.

Through regular activities, shared projects, and school events, buddies connect throughout the year to learn from one another and grow together. Older students gain leadership skills, responsibility, and empathy as they guide and support their younger peers, while younger students build confidence, feel supported, and look up to their buddies as positive role models.

The Buddy Program is one of the many ways we nurture a caring and inclusive school culture. It strengthens our community, bridges age groups, and helps every student feel seen, valued, and connected — making Laurel Hall feel more like a family than just a school.

Wayfinder

From Kindergarten through 8th grade, we use Wayfinder, an innovative online platform designed to help students build essential life skills like empathy, resilience, self-awareness, collaboration, and purpose.

Through interactive lessons, reflective activities, and meaningful discussions, Wayfinder guides students in understanding themselves and how they relate to others. Each grade level engages with age-appropriate content that fosters emotional intelligence, supports positive relationships, and equips students with the tools to navigate challenges both inside and outside the classroom.

Our teachers integrate Wayfinder into weekly classroom routines, creating a consistent and supportive space where students can practice communication, explore their values, and strengthen their sense of belonging. By the time they graduate, our students are not only prepared for academic success but are also confident, compassionate individuals ready to contribute positively to their communities.

Spot Series

In Kindergarten, we lay the foundation for social and emotional growth through the beloved Spot Series by Diane Alber — a collection of beautifully illustrated books that help young learners understand and manage their feelings. Each story introduces important concepts like kindness, empathy, confidence, and resilience in a way that’s engaging, age-appropriate, and easy for children to relate to.

Through read-alouds, discussions, and hands-on activities inspired by the Spot books, students learn to identify and express their emotions, build positive relationships, and develop essential self-regulation skills. These early lessons create a safe, supportive environment where children feel seen, valued, and ready to learn.
