Students will work out of the first Essential Elements method book, learning the basics in music, such as note names and rhythms, and how to apply them to their instrument. They will also learn various folk songs and classical pieces. Students will be assessed through class participation and playing evaluations.

4th Grade Strings

4th Grade Strings is open to any 4th grade student who was in Beginning Strings the previous year, or anyone who would like to learn violin, viola, or cello. For students who are beginners in this class, I would recommend private lessons for the first half of the year to catch up with the rest of the class. Students will continue to work out of the first Essential Elements method book, continuing to learn notes, rhythms, and string techniques. Students will be assessed through class participation and playing evaluations.

5th Grade Strings:

5th Grade Strings is open to any 5th grade student who completed a year in 4th Grade Strings. For any 5th grader who would like to learn violin, viola, or cello having never played before please contact mwright@laurelhall.com Students will work out of the second Essential Elements method book, developing string techniques, bowing techniques, and learning sight-reading skills. Students will learn easy level orchestral pieces in various genres and will be assessed through class participation and playing evaluations.

Middle School Strings:

Middle School Strings is for students who have already played at the Intermediate level, or who have played their instrument for at least one year. Students will study and perform pieces from a variety of different styles and genres. Students focus on developing vibrato, improving tone quality and bowing techniques, as well as building sight-reading skills. This class will also introduce music theory, ear training, and listening appreciation. Students will be assessed through class participation, theory quizzes, playing evaluations, and outside performances.

Drama with Mrs. Krubiner

4th Grade Drama

4th Grade Drama is a beginning drama class. We use theatre games and improvisation (another word for pretending) to create characters and explore our imaginations. You will read short monologues and scenes (no memorization necessary) and we will read a short play as a group. No previous experience necessary but a great imagination is a plus! Please bring a spiral notebook to class!

5th Grade Drama

5th Grade Drama is a bit more advanced than the 4th grade class, but beginners are still welcome. We will continue playing our favorite theatre games and become more comfortable with improvisation with a purpose. We will still use memories and emotions to understand how other characters feel and why they do what they do, and we will work on longer monologues and scenes (extra credit for memorization) and read a short play. Please bring a spiral notebook to class!

Middle School Drama

Middle School Drama (Fine Arts)

The middle school drama fine arts class is three days a week and is more advanced than the elementary school drama classes. We work on trust exercises to make the room a safe place, we explore objectives in scene work and improvisation, we work on scenes and monologues regularly and learn about the history of drama, distinctive styles of acting and practical knowledge about theatre acting. We will focus specifically on at least one Shakespeare play during the school year and learn fun facts about theatre during the Bard’s time. Please bring a spiral notebook to class!

Middle School Drama (Elective)

The drama elective is a performance-based class. We will use theatre games and improvisations specifically as they help us create characters, perform monologues and scenes (that we have memorized) and work toward performance opportunities both in school and out. We will present an evening of scenes and monologues or a short play at some time during the school year. There may be some on-camera opportunities in class as well. Please bring a folder, a pencil, and a highlighter to class!
