WHAT'S HAPPENING THIS WEEK!

5th grade students enjoying their surprise shadow day with the 8th graders.
RED NOSE DAY
We have an opportunity to do our part as a school to help promote Red Nose Day. Red Nose Day is a worldwide movement to help end child poverty. On Wednesday, May 2 a news crew will arrive at Laurel Hall mid-afternoon, accompanied by Kelly Clarkson. The event will be filmed and used to promote the national movement and television show which airs Thursday, May 24th. The Red Nose Day organization will assist us with such things as lesson plans and a “script” for students who are involved in the day’s fundraising activities. The foundation will film Ms. Clarkson engaged with students in a class setting, during fund raising activities, and at a “rally” that celebrates Red Nose Day awareness. This is a great opportunity for the school community and we will simultaneously raise money and awareness for a very worthy cause.

UCLA WRITING PROJECT
The UCLA Writing Project is co-sponsoring a Writing Competition on the UCLA campus Saturday, May 19, 2018.  What makes our competition unique is a classroom learning opportunity that gets students talking, reading and drafting before the actual “writing to the prompt.”  Our teachers, UCLA Writing Project fellows, are master teachers who love to write and to teach writing. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Faye Peitzman at peitzman@gseis.ucla.edu.

Please also see our website, uclawp.org, for summer writing workshops for students.
